In the scorching heat of Indian summers, it is the Earthern pot (matka), which provides cold drinking water to a large part of the population. A person may be poor, a villager or living at a place where there is power-cut, he largely depends on matka to provide him cold water. This is an example of a Design created because of constrains and limitations.
The ‘Jaipur Foot’ is yet another example of a Design made under the scorching heat of Indian summers, it is the Earthern pot (matka), which provides cold drinking water to a large part of population. This is an example of a Design created because of constrains and limitations.
The ‘Jaipur Foot’ is yet another example of a Design made under deprivation. It is a unique Design created by Dr. P.K. Sethi of Jaipur. He made Prosthetic limbs for the poor at a very reasonable cost. Since this invention has been made, many millions of people in developing, underdeveloped and war afflicted nations have been immensely benefited. It has even been worn by celebrities, including classical dancer Sudha Chandran.
Usually, it is assumed that world-class facilities, money, and technical know-how are the pre-requisites to create a ‘Design’. However, the above two examples prove that poor artisans and craftsman with a little amount of money and a reasonably good skill set can develop something unbelievingly useful.
It is need, constrains and limitations which make a Designer think, or they can even turn an ordinary person into a Designer while he tries to meet out the needs, and create Designs which value even more than the expensive ones in terms of utility.
When we look around carefully we will find many small objects and even devices which are reasonably prized and were created to suffice a need, though they may not necessarily be of everyone’s use but they surely cater to a large number of people and their needs.
